NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR SIDEWALK SHEDS
  • When installed for façade repair projects (e.g., local law 11), sheds do not need to be installed beyond 40′ from the building, as long as the building has no setbacks, no projections above the 2’* story other than AC units, lintels or sills. This is a new exception in B.C. 53307.6.3.
  • Shed height will now be 12′ rather than the historical minimum height of 8′ (unless the 12′ height will interfere with air, light or egress, especially fire escapes). This changes B.C. $3307.6.4.7.
  • Acceptable colors for shed components (frames, braces, parapets, legs, vertical members, beams, cross bracing, and metallic elements) when used on existing buildings, other than full demolitions, will now be hunter green, metallic gray, white, or any color that matches the façade, trim, cornice, or sloped roof (metallic elements of shed frames may still remain metallic gray and mesh parapets may be black). This changes B.C. $3307.6.4.11.
  • Construction fences shall be painted hunter green, metallic gray, white, or any color that matches the façade, trim, cornice, or sloped roof. This changes B.C. §3307.7.9.
  • Construction fences must match the same color of the shed when installed for new buildings and full demolitions in accordance with B.C. §3307.7.
In addition to the above, the DOB will be finalizing Rules relating to the use of containment netting in lieu of sidewalk sheds.
